The first was the <\/span><b>uninspired transfer of paper dictionaries onto websites<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0without modifying\u00a0the format to integrate\u00a0the features and\u00a0connections possible in its new digital surroundings. The second was the long-term issue of <\/span><b>undictionaried words<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which causes wide-spread confusion about wordhood and legitimacy. What does it mean if a word does not appear in a dictionary?\u00a0Is it not good enough, is it too new, or is\u00a0there just no space for it in the physical book?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately for us, Erin has been working to solve both of these issues through\u00a0<strong>Wordnik<\/strong>, an online dictionary which includes entries for\u00a0ALL THE WORDS of English.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.encyclopediabriannica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Screen-Shot-2015-09-15-at-12.08.58-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-133 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.encyclopediabriannica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Screen-Shot-2015-09-15-at-12.08.58-AM-300x71.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 12.08.58 AM\" width=\"300\" height=\"71\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.encyclopediabriannica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Screen-Shot-2015-09-15-at-12.08.58-AM-300x71.png 300w, https:\/\/www.encyclopediabriannica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Screen-Shot-2015-09-15-at-12.08.58-AM.png 434w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every word and phrase on Wordnik has its own page, populated with definitions, examples, related words, pictures, pronunciations, and community discussions. For adopting quiddity, I received stickers, a certificate, and my name on the Wordnik quiddity page for a year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I chose <strong>quiddity<\/strong>\u00a0because it sounds fancy, and is a fancy philosophical concept, but also translates as <strong>whatness<\/strong>,\u00a0which belongs in an existential reboot of \u201cWho\u2019s on First.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.encyclopediabriannica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_48171.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-115 size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.encyclopediabriannica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_48171-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.encyclopediabriannica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_48171-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.encyclopediabriannica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_48171-1024x748.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordnik.com\/lists\/whats-my-favorite-word?utf8=%E2%9C%93&amp;sorting%5Btype%5D=alpha%2Casc#\">I love many words<\/a>, and next year I may adopt <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordnik.com\/words\/inexpressibles\">inexpressibles<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordnik.com\/words\/breadth\">breadth<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordnik.com\/words\/companion\">companion<\/a><\/strong>, but I\u2019d be right <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordnik.com\/words\/chuffed\">chuffed<\/a>\u00a0if someone else adopted them first. There are millions of adoptable words, and I have a crush on most of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can adopt any word on Wordnik through the Kickstarter for just\u00a0<strong>$25<\/strong>. People tend to choose established words with well-populated pages, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordnik.com\/words\/emoji\">emoji<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordnik.com\/words\/cat\">cat<\/a>,\u00a0but you can adopt elaborate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordnik.com\/words\/this%20and%20take%20it%20home%20in%20a%20wee%20snug%20basket\">phrases<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordnik.com\/words\/punch-butt\">neologisms<\/a> just the same. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>AGENCY.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the sentence <strong>&#8220;The monster destroyed the city&#8221;<\/strong>, the monster is the agent, and the city is the patient. The monster acts out the action of the verb, while the city has the action of the verb happen to it.<\/p>\n<p>Many people have cast themselves as patients of English, walking cautiously around the language, trying not to wake it. They&#8217;re afraid they&#8217;ll make mistakes and be punished by an omniscient judge. And while it&#8217;s true that people make judgments based on your written and spoken words, you haven&#8217;t been sentenced to a life in word prison unless you&#8217;ve done it\u00a0to\u00a0yourself.<\/p>\n<p>English is a living language. It is dynamic. By using it every day, you are shaping what it is, and what it will become. <strong>If you love a word, use it. That&#8217;s what makes words real in English.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Putting\u00a0all of the words of English in the same place, under the same banner, in the same soup, will be, and already is, a very powerful thing. By including ALL THE WORDS, Wordnik is removing the barriers between SAT vocabulary, technical jargon, and regional slang.
